6 Tips For Becoming a Happier Person

Sometimes we feel like everything is crashing down on us and we don’t know how to handle it, emotions are a part of life.  We all want to be happier and live more content lives but sometimes it’s hard when we feel so much negativity.  Happiness is different for everyone and you have to find what works best for you on your journey to be happier.

Eat Healthier Foods

eat healthier foods

It’s simple, when we eat horribly we feel horrible.  That extra value meal may make you happy for a short period of time but as soon as you’re done with it I guarantee you it will begin to make you feel crappy again.  I know this because I used to do this.  I always ate fast food because it made me happy but *spoiler alert* it didn’t make me happy in the long run.  We feel discouraged when we eat too much and feel too full, sometimes we even hate ourselves.  Eating healthier foods and making healthier options will elevate your mood and make you feel much better almost immediately.

Smile

smile

Believe it or not, just smiling an elevate your mood and make you a happier person.  Smiling causes your brain to release a hormone that will put you in a better mood immediately, even if you smile when you’re generally not happy.  If you feel that you can’t smile, do something that makes you happy!  Call a friend who can make you laugh, go for a walk, go for coffee with a friend — absolutely anything that can elevate your mood! By smiling, you are choosing to be happy and that will help a great deal with getting rid of a negative mindset.

Gratitude Journal

Sometimes we can be so down on ourselves that we don’t think we have anything to be happy about, frequently we’re mistaken about that.  We have so much to be happy and thankful about in our lives but on occasion, we can’t remember any of those things.  Starting a gratitude journal and recording what you’re thankful for every day can remind us of all the gifts that we do have in our lives.  It will show us what ultimately makes us happy, even if they’re simple and cliche things.

Pets

Studies show that pets relieve depression and make us happier people and I find that is completely true.  Pets will always love you unconditionally because they know that you love them unconditionally.  If you’re feeling down, spend time with your pet.  They will always be happy to give you a hug, cuddle or kiss without wanting anything in return.

Find the Issue

find the issue

I understand that sometimes there is no actual issue that is causing you to be unhappy, trust me I battle with depression every day, but sometimes there is a cause to our unhappiness.  If you know there is a root cause, try to find what it is that is making you unhappy.  If it’s finances, try to figure out a budget that you and your family can live with.  Are you spending too much on things you don’t need?  Are you in a toxic relationship or friendship that is making you upset?  Do something about it, sometimes we are better off without those people in our lives.  Once you find out what the issue is you can easily pinpoint how to fix it or ways to make it better.

If you know that there is no root cause and you’re just plain depressed sometimes it’s important to seek professional advice or be put on medication.  I went for years trying to handle my depression on my own until I couldn’t anymore.  It got to the point where I was so miserable all of the time that I had to swallow my pride and go to the doctor to see what could be done. You have to do what you have to do, take it from someone who knows from experience.

Exercise

When you exercise your body releases endorphins that can combat being sad, and I do believe that is very true.  You will also feel better about yourself knowing that you are on the road to being a healthier person.  You don’t even have to go to the gym to accomplish this, you can simply go for a walk or do some home exercises that can release those same endorphins!

I understand how hard it is to feel unhappy all of the time but taking a few steps throughout your day to combat any sadness can definitely help.  Like I said originally if you find that you’re taking these steps and you still feel defeated or depressed please contact a medical professional who will be able to help you.  It helped me tremendously!
